THAI Makes Landing at Danang Airport in Vietnam
On 4th June 2001, Thai Airways International flight TG635, operating on the route Seoul-Taipei-Bangkok, experienced some technical problems on its last leg between Taipei and Bangkok. The pilot diverted the flight and landed at Danang Airport in Vietnam.
THAI's Boeing 777-200, registration number HS-TJC, carried a total of 303 passengers (293 economy class seats and 10 Business class seats), departed from Seoul at 17:30 hours, and arrived at Taipei airport at 19:00 hours. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Bangkok at 22:55 hours.
While the aircraft was flying towards Bangkok, a warning signal appeared indicating problems with the fuel system, and the pilot decided to divert and land the flight at the nearest airport, which was in Danang, Vietnam in order to ensure maximum safety of all passengers. There were no reports of injuries.
A special flight was arranged to bring all the 303 passengers to Bangkok. The flight departed from Bangkok on 5th June 2001, at 08:00 hours and arrived in Danang at 09:30 hours. The flight departed from Danang at 11:40 hours, with 303 passengers, and landed safely at Don Muang Airport at 12:50 hours.
Aircraft spare parts have been sent for checks and inspections. It is expected to resume its scheduled operations on 7th June 2001.
Results of THAI's Executive Committee Meeting
Bangkok, 29 May 2001 -- Following Thai Airways International's Executive Committee Meeting held at THAI's Head Office, Mr. Sunthorn Pokhachaiyapat, Chairman of THAI's Executive Committee, made thefollowing announcement:
1. Plans to Improve Inflight Entertainment Systems and Equipment
Thai Airways International is proceeding with plans to make improvements to four of THAI's aircraft types, those being Boeing 777-300, Boeing 777-200, Boeing 747-400 and Airbus 330-300 aircraft. Work is currently underway to improve THAI's six Boeing 777-300 aircraft, as the first priority.
Since year 2000, THAI's Board of Directors has committed to improving THAI's inflight entertainment systems and equipment, service standards, and increasing the level of efficiency, which was prior to the appointment of Mr. Bhisit Kuslasayanon as airline president.On 15 May 2001, the Management proposed a total of approximately 2,000 million Baht budget, equivalent to USD 140 million to improve eight Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The budget is allocated as follows:
- 400 million Baht for aircraft seats
- 500 million Baht for inflight entertainment
- 1,000 million Baht for aircraft main structure from aircraft manufacturer
The Board of Directors views this inflight entertainment systems improvement plan as a substantial investment. Therefore, it was agreed that THAI's Management would reconsider and further study the plans in detail for maximum benefit to the company as well as for THAI to compete effectively with other airlines. THAI's Management sought advice and closely coordinated with ACM Nopporn Chanthavanich, a member of THAI's Executive Committee. The issue was included in the agenda of the last Board of Directors' Meeting on 23rd May. This project is being considered by the Board, and therefore the Executive Committee is unable to provide any further detail on the project at this time.
2. External Office at THAI for Members of Executive Committee
In response to the news published in some newspapers concerning a request to set up offices for members of the Executive Committee with a budget of 17 million Baht, Mr. Sunthorn Pokachaiyapipat, Chairman of the Executive Committee, said that on 4 May 2001, a request was made to THAI's Building & Premises Department to arrange offices for seven members of the Executive Committee and 20 assistants.Two members of the Executive Committee are THAI executives, who already have offices at THAI's Head Office. THAI's Building & Premises Department has suggested that the 21st floor, Building 1, THAI's Head Office, may be used as the temporary office and the 27th floor, Building 5 as a permanent office. On 18 May 2001, the Building & Premises Department submitted an estimated cost of 17 million Baht for setting up external offices for members of the Executive Committee. On 21 May 2001, the Chairman of the Executive Committee informed THAI's President to postpone the plan and requested the use of the area on the 21st floor as a temporary office for the members of the Executive Committee.
3. Review of Purchasing and Employment Procedures
The Chairman of the Executive Committee confirmed that the committee has not in anyway interfered with the airline's purchasing and employment procedures. The regulations and procedures applicable to THAI's purchasing and employment remain unchanged.
THAI Plans for Seat and IFE Improvement
Mr. Bhisit Kuslasayanon, President, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, today announced that THAI planned to improve seats and in-flight entertainment on its B747-400, B777-200, B777-300 and A330-300. "THAI has a two-year plan to improve and develop its First and Executive Class seats and in-flight entertainment under a budget of USD 100 million. At the same time, THAI has initiated a range of internal campaigns and projects to boost staff morale and introduce a 'service from the heart' attitude among staff especially, those working in front line."
These matters have been raised with THAI's management and are now among THAI's main priorities. The aircraft seats and in-flight entertainment will be further developed to maximize passengers' satisfaction.
Currently, THAI has a total of 79 aircraft in its fleet.
THAI Announces Results of Board of Directors’ Meeting
Bangkok, 23 May 2001 --- Thai Airways International Public Company Limited held a Board of Directors’ Meeting, chaired by Mr. Chai-anan Samudavanija, THAI’s Chairman, with the following results:
1. Air Travel Benefits of THAI Board Members
The Board of Directors has established the following guidelines for travel benefits for members of THAI’s Board of Directors.
The current members of THAI’s Board are allowed to have not more than ten return trips per year (five for domestic and five for international destinations), while the former members of the board are allowed to have two return trips per year (one for domestic and one for international destinations). Only one companion ticket is allowed for each trip.
The air travel benefits given to THAI employees remain unchanged. The rules and regulations regarding complimentary and special discounts for promotional and similar purposes will be revised by the Executive Committee.
2. Appointment of Aviation Fuel Purchasing Sub-Committee

THAI Launches Electronic Ticketing (E-Ticketing) Services
Thai Airways International Public Company Limited will launch its Electronic Ticketing (E-Ticketing) service in June 2001, to enhance the efficiency of the services for THAI passengers. On the occasion of THAI’s 41st anniversary, the airline has improved its technologies in order to meet and increase the level of customer satisfaction.
E-Ticketing is becoming trend for travelling, which will be made available to THAI’s passengers when they make reservations through the airline’s Reservation Office at tel. no. (66-02) 628-2000 or (66-02) 280-0060-89 (24 hours), via THAI’s Ticketing Offices, THAI’s travel agents or THAI’s web site www.thaiairways.com. The E-ticketing system is more convenient, efficient, and less time-consuming when purchasing air tickets, changing flights, and redeeming tickets which have not been used, safeguarding in case of passenger ticket loss, and offering added convenience for flight changes without passengers’ tickets. With E-ticketing, all passenger data will be recorded in the computer by the online computer system. During the check-in process, passengers are requested to identify themselves by showing their personal identification card and passport etc. Passengers may pay with cash or with credit cards for E- ticket travel.
Electronic Ticketing or E-ticketing is the new way to travel, whereby paper tickets would no longer be needed. THAI’s E-ticketing services will be implemented on Wednesday, 11th,June 2001, on domestic routes, which are Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, and Phuket. E-ticketing services for international routes such as those in America and Japan will be implemented in August, while Australia, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan will be effective in September.
Leading airlines that have already implemented the E-ticketing system are United Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, British Airways, US Air, and American Airlines.

THAI Announces Results of the Second Quarter and Six Months' Operations
Following the company's report of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited in its second quarter (January-March 2001), the airline achieved the net profit of 790 million baht. For the six months' operations between October 2000 to March 2001, THAI announced a net loss of 935 million baht.
Mr. Amnuay Chanya, THAI's Executive Vice President, Finance and Information Technology, announced a total revenue of 33,240 million baht during the second quarter and net profit of 790 million baht, which is a decrease of 1,246 million baht or 61.19 per cent compared to the same period last year. This is due to a sharp increase of world's oil price, which resulted in an increase of 1,021 million baht expenditure on aircraft fuel compared to the same period the year before. In addition, the weakening of baht value caused a loss of 2,674 million baht in foreign exchange compared to the same period last year where THAI gained 1,128 million baht from the foreign exchange. The foreign exchange loss in the second quarter was 3,802 million baht higher than the same period last year.
As for the six months' operations between October 2000 to March 2001, THAI announced a total revenue of 65,919 million baht and net loss of 935 million baht, a decrease of 10,625 million baht or 109.65 percent, compared to the same period last year. This is equivalent to 0.67 baht net loss per share compared to earnings per share of 6.92 baht in the same period last year. This is a result of increase in fuel cost, which was 4,187 million baht higher than the same period last year. The devaluation of the Thai baht resulted in a loss in foreign exchange of 4,180 million baht compare to the same period last year in which THAI achieved 7,977 million baht profit from the foreign exchange. During the six months' operations, THAI was affected from a total loss from foreign exchange of 12,157 million baht compared to the same period last year.

THAI Technical Department Awarded ISO 14001 Certification
30 April 2001--- Lt. JG. Chusak Bhachaiyudh, Executive Vice President, Technical, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, led the team of technical management to receive the ISO 14001 Certificate awarded to THAI’s Bangkok Technical Department and U-Tapao Aircraft Maintenance Facility from Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) represented by Mr. Min Htut, Deputy Managing Director.
“Safety is at the heart of all operations, and at THAI’s Technical Department, safety means a lot more. It covers safety at work for staff, safety of the environment and surrounding community. The management is committed to make sure that these issues are continually improved and maintained. Internal auditors have been appointed to maintain the ISO 14000 standard. The Technical Department began to implement the ISO environmental standard in January 2000 and was officially awarded ISO 14001 Cetification on 16 March 2001. The ISO 14001 environmental management system enhances the working procedures to ensure maximum safety of the environment and surrounding community. THAI’s Technical Department operates according to the rules and regulations set by Civil Aviation Authorities and in accordance with international safety and environmental standards of Star Alliance member airlines.
In the past, THAI’s Technical Department was awarded the ISO 9002 Certification in February 1998. THAI also banned the use of CFC chemicals and implemented the noise abatement regulations.
There are total of 4,273 staff working at THAI’s Technical Department. The U-Tapao Second Aircraft Maintenance Facility was officially opened in May 1999.

1 May 2001 at 14.00 hours, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited held its second Extraordinary Shareholders' Meeting for year 2001, which was presided over by Mr. Srisook Chantrangsu, Chairman of THAI's Board of Directors. Three of THAI Provincial Cargo Stations Awarded ISO 9002
27 April 2001--- Mr. Veravat Chotiros, Vice President, Industry Relations & Commercial, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, chaired the official award presentation ceremony of ISO 9002 Certification of THAI Cargo Provincial Stations (Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Phuket) from the Bureau Varitas Quality International (BVQI) at THAI’s Head Office.
Mr. Veravat Chotiros said, “Maintaining the highest standard of service quality and boosting staff morale are among THAI’s priorities. At the same time, THAI continues to introduce innovative strategies and technologies to further improve the standard of service. Our goal is to best satisfy customers and strengthen trust among them in every aspect of services including cargo.”
The implementation of the ISO 9002 quality and service system at THAI CARGO provincial stations began on 17 November 1999 and were awarded the ISO 9002 certification from BUREAU VERITAS QUALITY INTERNATIONAL (BVQI) on 27 December 2000.
Adding to the highly efficient and well-developed THAI cargo services at Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Phuket stations, the ISO 9002 certification helps guarantee that the service quality will be maintained and audited on a continual basis. Customers are guaranteed safe and punctual delivery of their cargo at its destination. “The management and staff of THAI Cargo take great pride in this achievement. It is certain that THAI will continue to strengthen the cargo operations in all areas of services in the future.” said Kawin Asvarchatroj, THAI’s Cargo and Mail Commercial Department Vice President.
During the past years, THAI was the proud recipient of ISO certifications in many Departments. The ISO 9002 certification was awarded to THAI’s Technical Department, Catering Services Department, Ground Services Department, Operations Department, General Administration Department and Cargo Bangkok Station Office. The ISO 14001 certification was awarded to THAI’s Headquarters.
